Education and gender equality are central concerns in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly emphasized through Sustainable Development Goals 4 and 5. There are large gender gaps in access, learning achievement and continuation in education in many settings, most often at the expense of girls and women. Some 16 million girls will never set foot in a classroom and women account for 2/3 of the global adult population without basic literacy skills.
Through its Strategy for Gender Equality in and through Education, UNESCO aims to promote gender equality, strengthen education systems, as well as to empower girls and women.
